Rainy Day Weekend Going-ons

Posted by sleepycathollow on 27 May 2008

Well…it rained most of the weekend.  So I spent it planting the last of my garden and finding homes for some Nebraska plants in my yard. Hit a few estate sales and thrift stores. And snuggled under the quilts that I threw into the dryer to warm up.

My mom dug up two of grandma’s peonies (Lynch, NE) from her yard that I replanted in my front yard. She also gave me some hostas from O’Neil, NE…planted them under the cedar tree near the house…which is really the only shady spot in the whole yard! Had to buy some pepper plants as my seeds didn’t come up. :( Also bought a six-pack of strawberries.

Yesterday my husband and I took the hike that I took on my photography field trip ~ Deadman’s Creek trail on the south end of Washoe Valley. Luckily it didn’t rain while we were out there. A new crop of wildflowers were blooming ~ the Phlox were all gone as were the Desert Peach. In their place were Wild Onions and Mule Ears. Ohhh…and I’d say in a couple of days or maybe this weekend the Wild Roses will be blooming like crazy on the trail!!! And if I remember right, it was a Red-Tailed Hawk that had a nest near the group-use picnic area at Washoe Lake State Park ~ there are two young’uns in the nest now. One is definitely getting most of the food, I hope the little guy makes it…he or she is a cutie. Those stupid Bullock’s Orioles still would let me take their picture.

Picked up a few books from the yard and estate sales ~

Sara Midda’s In & Out of the Garden
Juliette Clarke’s An Illustrated Gardener’s Notebook
Hugh Noonan & Emery Tang’s Listen, The Clams are Talking
Jean Marzolla’s I Spy Spooky Night
Bill Engvall’s Just a Guy
Cornelia Funke’s The Thief Lord
Mike Molloy’s The Witch Trade
Jerry Baker’s Perfect Perennials
Jerry Baker’s Oddball Ointments, Powerful Potions & Folk Remedies

At the estate sale I also found two brand new soaker hoses for $1 each, a pair of Indiana Carnival glass (blue grape) candle holders for .25 cents each, and a Ridgid Pipe Cutter in the box for a price I’d rather not say…it would make a guy faint if I posted the low price. ROFL!

Below is a very pretty wall of clematis at my in-law’s house ~

Garden, Quilting, Photography & Yard Sales Makes for a Great Weekend

Posted by sleepycathollow on 19 May 2008

Even though we were cursed with 96 degree record breaking temps 3 days in a row…I had a great weekend!

My garden is sprouting like crazy now! Peas, PUMPKINS, squash (all three kinds), radishes, cucumbers, black beans, bush beans, either the spinach or romaine (can’t remember which side was which) and corn.

Was at the Washoe County Extension Office’s Master Gardener Plant Sale bright and early Saturday morning…but not as bright and early as a few hardy soles. We were in the first 1/4 of the line though! I bought 4 different tomato plants (Black Russian, Black Japanese, Beligum something, and a Yellow Plum), 3 Basil plants (Cinnamon, Lime, and regular), 2 rhubarbs, clary sage, borage, parsley, 2 hollyhocks, 2 Irish bells.

For $1.50 I picked up two Kodak box cameras at the Sparks Community Rummage Sale ~ Brownie Starflex and a Duaflex.

Cleaned the Duaflex up and then tried the ‘Through the Viewfinder’ method…I need to read more about that one as I don’t think I grasp it yet. :-( This is what I was able to take ~

My lupine I planted last year is beautiful right now ~ the three plants are loaded with stalks starting to bloom.

And…I finished the binding on a lap quilt that will be heading to Gulf Port, MS soon.

This Weekend’s El Rancho Swap Meet Finds

Posted by sleepycathollow on 12 May 2008

We took it nice and easy on Sunday ~ washed two cars, went to the swap meet, took a nap and went out to dinner.

Both my husband and I found a treasure for ourselves! I actually found quite a few treasures, but only bought one.

Mine is a No. 2-C Autographic Kodak, Jr. 13458 camera! Made by Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester, NY. It has two patent dates, Jan. 18, 1910 and Jan. 7, 1913.

I found my husband’s treasure…but he soon took it from me to examine it for 15 minutes, put it down, came back to look at it, left the swap meet altoghther, turned the truck around and went back in, bought it. LOL!

A 1930’s Commodore Vanderbilt New York Central Lines train engine.

We both came away from the El Rancho Swap Meet very happy.
